If you live and work in Portland, I’m sure you’ve had the conversation with people out of state who ask about the ‘rain/weather’. We’ve all had to answer the ubiquitous questions of: “Doesn’t it rain all the time in Portland?”, “How warm does it get up there?”, “Aren’t there a lot of hippies?”… You know, all these types of questions. I’m also sure that you’ve had to defend Portland by telling people that it really does get nice and there is plenty of industry outside of Nike.

When the PDC (Portland Development Commission) reached out looking for a video to open up the keynote speech of the 2011 OIA Rendezvous, we saw this as the perfect opportunity to make a piece that showcases how we view Portland, as locals. And that’s exactly what we did.

Splash took on the production and post-production roll, but none of it would have been possible without all of the help from the other companies involved! I was the Director/DP/camera op./editor and I hired Caleb Booth (audio/camera op.) and Cory Standridge (gapher/camera op.). Major thanks to those two guys for busting ass over the 3 long days of production. Pollinate and Flying Horse Communication also played major rolls in reaching out to the profiled companies and setting up locations/times, as well as Sockeye for supplying a good chunk of the b-roll. SAMM busted out a great score that set a great mood and tone that carries throughout the piece.

We made the decision to shoot it all on a Canon 5D and two Canon 7D’s (not sure what the supplied video was shot with). I’ve been using Canon DSLR’s to shoot video for about two years now, so the quick turn and low budget made the decision a no-brainer. Luckily through our good relationship with Pro Photo Supply we were able to get a SMOKING rate on 3, Zeiss Compact CinePrime lenses for the week! If you’ve never used one of these lenses before, do yourself a favor and go rent one, honestly. The full frame of the 5D plus the amazing build quality of the CinePrimes produced and image that I’ve never seen before from my own DLSR footage.

The next time you’re asked about living/working in Portland, or if you’re curious yourself, use this video as your explanation.

I recently shot and edited this rad video that played at Channing and Danger Ehren’s “Dead or Alive” Halloween party that benefitted the Frye Family Foundation’s initiative “Frye Pads”.

Props to Channing, Ehren, and Aaron Ross for killing it!

Travel videos/blogs/photos usually give me a rash because everyone that makes them thinks that every photo they took of Machu Picchu is National Geographic worthy. Take this photo of The Leaning Tower of Pisa for example…

That’s why I’m happy to present you with Rick Mereki’s video. He edited each unique location into one second of footage. BRILLZ! I love how well it’s put together too. Short, no frills, no thrills, no bullllll shiiiii…. Enjoy.

If you visit my site regularly, you know that I’m addicted to motion graphics and the process behind it. Being is that I’m in the same industry I usually have a good idea how things are done, but I’m always impressed at the level of detail that people integrate. This video is no exception! Just check out how many layer of clouds they put in and you’ll know what I’m talking about. I also really like how well they broke down the effects! Full disclosure is always refreshing to see, especially in the creative industry where it’s so competitive. You boys OddBall Animation and SoapBox Films killed it!

The song is called “Eye of the Storm” by Lovett.

Our buddies, Steve and Tyler, are freaking idea machines! I can’t speak for them, but it was nearly impossible for me to keep my composure while shooting these takes. In fact, you can even see my camera start to wiggle after Tyler gives Steve a mouthful on one of the shots. The Steve ‘N Tyler show is solid gold, stay tuned for more RainBreak minisodes.

Here are the past episodes for you to enjoy :)

This is a perfect video. Not overly graphical. Not trying too hard. Not underwhelming. It’s perfect for what it is. I haven’t researched “Stuxnet” at all, but if it’s true that’s one intense virus!

This spot blew me away! The 3D and compositing is flawless and very tastefully done.

However, one thing that struck me as odd was DamienDamien’s BLATANT ripoff of Daft Punk’s Tron: Legacy soundtrack style. The whole time I was watching this piece I kept thinking, “Wow they must have licensed the Tron music for this video.” But after a quick google I found out that it wasn’t even Daft Punk to begin with. Oh well, thems the breaks. This piece fokn slays regardless.

So after watching the video above, check this out and tell me it’s not damn near identical!

Have you ever gotten a wild hare to grab your bike and friends and set off on 100 mile days through some of the most amazing roads in America?… No, of course you haven’t. Neither have I. The studs from Rapha, however, did do this and we were there to shoot it.

A good friend of mine, Matt Miadich, owns the production company, Droptree Productions, was hired to document the ride and shenanigans of this latest Continental ride. Much to my good fortune Matt called me up and brought me on-board to help shoot. At any given time we had 4 cameras (Canon 7D’s), 9 different lenses, 3 shoulder braces, 2 sliders and 1 glide cam… ALL shoved into a Subaru Outback Sport… Not ideal, but we made it work!

All together this project was truly one of best production experiences of my life! I loved the camaraderie, conversations, Caleb driving like a darsh, sharing a bed with Cory for a week… Ok well some more than others. I can’t wait to do it again and only hope I get another opportunity like it!

Here are a few photos of the trip to sink your teeth into.

To some of us close to the brand, DB Clay never left, but the outside world knows something quite the contrary. So when Garett approached Caleb and I to help him with a Kickstarter campaign the decision was easy. HELL YEAH! Garett and Mr. Diggles did an amazing job taking an idea from a Saturday Market, weekend warrior hobby to a full-blown international product design company with a ridiculously minimal amount of help. Having seen it first hand was truly inspiring and motivational. db clay never really died, they just went on vacation.

Well, now they’re back.

It was really fun working with Garett and Caleb to produce a video for Kickstarter, and I have no doubts that it’s going to be more than successful. Thanks to Caleb too for taking on the full responsibility of editing this piece through all the revisions and feedback.

Watch the video, check out DB Clay’s website, and contribute!

If anyone has info as to what the fudge this video is for, I’d love to know! It has a heavy, video game feel to it but I have no idea.
